this fall

Here I am!  Having time to update the SAME EVENING that I actually have a shred of energy left!  Wow!  It seems like whenever I have time to sit down and do something (which actually happens almost every day), all I want to do is sleep with that time.  I make it a point to do my chores while the boys are awake so that I can rest guilt-free while they rest.  In fact, today I was washing the dishes with Mac (love my double sink, he washes dishes with me almost every day because I can put him at the second sink with whatever plastic dishes I just washed and he can pour and splash to his heart's content) and Seth on my back because he didn't want to miss out on any of the fun.  It was the first time I'd tied Seth on my back though, so he didn't last the whole time because he got tired of it.

So am I the only person who can't find a single thing to pin on Pinterest during spring and summer, but then when fall hits, all of a sudden my Pinterest boards light up!  And nothing will make a full girl feel hungry quicker than Pinterest.  I have a few projects on my radar that I have pinned as I look ahead to the holidays, but it just isn't the same this year.  Most years when fall hits, I get into project mode and start canning apple butter and crocheting baby hats and stuff.  This year, I look at Pinterest and think "oh that's cute, it would be nice if someone made it for my kids."  I have like no motivation to do any projects.  I'm sure it has nothing to do with having a 22 month and 4 month old.  *See above sentence about resting while they rest.  I have done one project though, I had to come up with a stocking for Seth because I don't have any fabric left of the skirt I made the rest of us stockings from two years ago.  I'm pretty happy with the top I found at Goodwill to make Seth's stocking out of - it was half price that week and I think this stocking will go really well with the three I already had.

Other than that, I've been busy keeping the children alive, shopping, winning Swagbucks (I made goal each day in October, yay), and scrubbing liquid foundation out of the futon in Mac's room.  He got into my makeup one day and I didn't realize it until he had foundation and mascara all over himself, the futon, the carpet, and a little on the chair.  I mean handprints of foundation on the futon.  It was such a large area that got affected and I don't really like scrubbing things.  So far I've tried plain water, makeup remover, Tide, and club soda on it and I also tried using my dirt devil spot shot thingy on it but I got it at a garage sale and it doesn't have the user manual and I'm not really sure how it works so I need to look up the manual online.

Seth is pretty laid back but I'm trying to make the most of his babyhood before he grows up too fast.  I can't believe he's 4 months already. :(  He plays in the Jumparoo now (which we didn't even get until Mac was like 9 months old)  and has gotten the hang of jumping now.  He still eats every 2 hours (sigh) and is awake once or twice in the night.  But since he's only in the 15th percentile for his weight, I have a hard time making him wait longer to eat even though he is so old to be eating so often.  He really loves Mac, despite all that Mac puts him through, and loves Mac's attention.

David has some changes at his job that has him commuting 15 minutes further each day than he was before.  This was pretty discouraging to us because he already commutes so far.  We're super thankful for consistent work, though.  Praise God he's worked there for a whole year already!

Mac's picking up more and more words.  He's at the stage now where he says "uh oh" about everything that isn't right, even if he did it on purpose.  Sometimes he deliberately tries to do something and then when he accomplishes it, he says "uh oh." haha!  His most recent word is "snack", sometimes it sounds like "rock" and sometimes like "shack" which is funny because those two don't sound like each other.  He likes to throw rocks outside and then clap for himself and say "yay" when he does.
ok I'm gonna scoot because hubby's home now.  There's a peek into what's been going on.  by the way, is it just me or does it seem like everyone has started spelling "peek" like "peak"?  so annoying!

Purex UltraPacks plus Oxi Detergent Giveaway!

Posted by: WoodElves / Category:

Have you tried laundry detergent gel-pacs yet?  I've been using the dishwasher ones, but have not tried the laundry variations yet - until Purex sent me a package of the new Purex UltraPacks with Oxi liquid laundry detergent gel-pacs to try.  They are super easy and convenient to use.  Purex makes it easy to fight stains (the concentrated DirtLift Action formula has 2x the cleaning power), while maintaining a simple laundry routine.

Honestly, I was a little unsure of how clean these would get my laundry.  After all, I use half a cupful of detergent in every load, and it didn't look like there was very much detergent in these little pacs.  However, they claim to contain a full load's worth of concentrated liquid detergent and they dissolve quickly in your wash.
I used these just like I use my regular Purex detergent, and I was pleased with how clean my laundry came out.  It was an abnormally LARGE load, too (I kept thinking I could fit one more thing in...!)  Still, some of the baby's clothes had poop leaks on them, and they came out clean, without any extra stain remover used.  I'm not sure that I would buy these over regular detergent though, because they seem expensive - only 18 pacs in one package.

But let me know what you think! I have THREE coupons for a FREE pack of new Purex UltraPacks plus Oxi detergent to give away!  I will contact the winners via email after the giveaway is ended and they will have 48 hours to claim their prize or a new winner will be chosen.

Mom Thoughts

Posted by: WoodElves / Category:

It's been a great summer for us, full of fun people and activities and another wonderful birth!  For the first time in awhile, I'm NOT ready for all things pumpkin by the first of September... I could use a couple more trips to the pool and beach, and I would have loved to have gone blueberry picking!  Maybe I'll be in the mood for fall by the time it actually comes.  But it's so much nicer ending the summer with Seth on the outside.  He's such a sweet boy and gives the best coos and smiles.  I think he's an easier baby than Mac was, even though both of my skinny little boys wanted to eat every 2 hours on. the. dot.  Seth "plays" in his jungle for long periods of time, whereas I don't remember Mac ever liking to be by himself.
It's also been fun watching Mac learning more things and growing in his understanding of what we say.  My favorite one from this week was telling Mac to go kill mosquitos and having him go over to the front door and put on a reenactment of us chasing mosquitos and trying to kill them. It was HILARIOUS.  I don't think he has any idea what a mosquito is, just the funny things he sees Mom and Dad do when they use the word "mosquito".

Our days can be long and they can be tiring, but I try to not just live to the next nap.  I told myself before Seth came, that I was going to have two babies now and to just not expect to sleep as much.  If I tell myself I'm exhausted and deserve a nap, well, I'm just going to be crabby a lot when I don't get one.  I'm better off telling myself, honey, you're just going to be exhausted for the next 10 years and to make the most of it.  I have also noticed, and I say this with all sincerity, that God does give more strength and grace to moms.  Before I was a mom, I could not have done what I do with the same amount of sleep.  I also notice that David and I might do the same thing and then he needs a 2 hour nap- but I lie down for a few minutes, can't go to sleep, and then the baby wakes up, and yet I still have enough strength to last the day.  THIS IS A GOD THING, PEOPLE!  So when I look at moms with five little kids and I shake my sleepy head and wonder how they do it - now I know.  It's real.

I saw a great article someone shared from Christianity Today for moms, about how our love of brokenness is actually hurting us and it is here.  The article explains itself, but it is addressing recent trends among Christian writers and bloggers of admitting to everyday failures and showing how we are all imperfect.  I actually really like this trend because I think it is good for us to be authentic and honest with ourselves and each other.  I think in our Facebook world it is easy for us to compare ourselves to each other and just see everyone else's neat little package that they show the world and only see the crazy inside of ours and think there's something wrong with us.  So, I love reading those articles where the writers remind us to give ourselves grace and that we aren't ruining our kids forever if we feed them Spaghetti O's.  But, as with everything, we have to be careful that we take it only to the limit that is biblical!  The article addresses the fact that some of these things may actually be SIN.  And we don't want to excuse that and laugh and think we're ok because everyone does it.  It's one thing to smile and say "we all have those days" when nothing goes right and the chores don't get done and thus encourage another mom... but I need my mom friends to NOT tell me that it's ok if the fact is that I was lazy, or if I was impatient and unkind to my children.
The other side of it, that I don't think the article really addressed, is that this trend also allows us to be more willing to settle for status quo.  If I know that every mom with two babies is an imperfect mom and doesn't get out of her jammies until 4pm and yelled at her kids once or twice and couldn't get them to eat any vegetables.... then why should I try very hard to be any better?  There is a temptation to just sigh with relief and say "everyone does it" and then not make any attempt to overcome that.  BUT- I want more for my kids, I don't want them to be normal.  I want my sons to grow up to be great men of God and Susanna Wesley's kids didn't grow up the way they did because their mom settled for the standard of everyone else.   She was an extraordinary woman who raised extraordinary children by the grace of God.

It is my failures that drive me to Jesus a thousand times in a day, and if I think "I've got this", then I am not setting myself up to seeing Him work in my day.  I appreciate being able to be authentic and not have to pretend like I have it all together when I don't.  We're all imperfect, but we also all need encouragement to love our children more and serve our husbands better and seek the presence of Jesus oftener.  Like I said, I love this trend where we are able to be open about our failures - but let's be careful to not exalt our failures, let us just make sure that they keep us running back to Him, where we belong.  I'd love to hear your thoughts, about the trend I reference, about the article, or about my half-baked take on it...

Purex Fabric Softener Sheets Giveaway

Posted by: WoodElves / Category:

I didn't know that Purex made fabric softener sheets until I was offered the opportunity to do this giveaway! It was great timing for us because I've been out of fabric softener for months and we've just been doing without. I thought this was a great opportunity to see if fabric softener really makes a difference in how the laundry turns out since we haven't had any for so long. Purex® Fabric Softener Sheets are supposed to do more than just leave your family’s laundry soft and smelling fresh, they also reduce static cling and repel pet hair and lint.

I received the sweet lavender scent to try and the box smelled wonderful when I opened it!  It did make my laundry smell great.  I didn't notice a reduction in static cling because we live by the ocean and it's only dry here in the winter so that isn't a problem in the summer.  The laundry did feel soft, though!

I have THREE coupons for a FREE BOX of Purex Fabric Softener Sheets to give away.  I will notify the winners  by email after the giveaway has ended and you will have 48 hours to claim your prize or a new winner will be chosen.

Fels-Naptha Giveaway

Posted by: WoodElves / Category:

Have you ever heard of Fels-Naptha laundry bars?  The Fels-Naptha brand is 120 years old, and they're still around!

These laundry bars remove stains their first time through the wash.  It pretreats dozens of stains and is safe on colors, is great on dirt, grease and ring-around-the-collar, and is easy to use and more effective than sprays.  To use, you simply rub the stain with a wet bar of Purex Fels-Naptha and wait a couple of minutes, then wash your clothes as you normally would.

I didn't have any really difficult grease stains, but I used the laundry bar on a few stains I did have.  It got blackberry and chocolate out of clothes, but there were a couple others (I can't remember what stained it, but it was a reddish/pinkish stain) that didn't come out completely so I might need to do it again and put it back through the wash.

Purex sent me THREE coupons for a free bar of Purex Fels-Naptha.  They are also running the 120 Years, 120 Winners sweepstakes where you get a chance to win the $500 grand prize, or be one of 119 second place winners to receive a free bar of Purex Fels-Naptha.

Enter below to win one of my coupons - I will email the winners and they will have 48 hours to claim their prize or a new winner will be chosen.

New Soft Scrub Review & Giveaway

Posted by: WoodElves / Category:

Lots of products from Soft Scrub have come lately to review and give away!  The newest one I received is the new Soft Scrub 4-in-1 Toilet Care.  This is a toilet bowl rim hanger that cleans toilets, prevents future buildup, fights toilet ring, and freshens for up to 4 weeks.  It comes in Sapphire Waters, or Alpine Fresh with bleach.  The little cleaner bombs sit in a plastic cage that hangs on the edge of your toilet to keep the product in place and allows water to activate the cleaner with each flush.  It also costs less than $2 at Walmart!

I'd never tried a toilet bowl rim hanger before, so I was very interested to try this out.  I like that it is constantly freshening up my toilet with every flush!  Although it does everything except actually scrub my toilet for me, I don't have to clean my toilet as often and I have not noticed as much toilet bowl ring building up.

I have THREE coupons for ANY FREE Soft Scrub product to give away, and you can get up to two entries.  I will be contacting the winners by email or Facebook and they will have 48 hours to respond or a new winner will be chosen.

Blessings

(old home)

The past week and a half have been a huge adventure for our family!  We were driving home from Easter out of state when we received a phone call from the condo association where we rent, that water was leaking into our neighbor's home and they believed it was coming from our house. Since we and our landlord were both out of town, they were going to contact a locksmith to get into the house and then call us back.  A couple of hours later, still driving, we received confirmation that our house was flooded, that it was coming from the hot water heater in the attic (!) above Mac's bedroom, and that it was uninhabitable.  Much later, we learned that the hot water heater was fine, but a pipe above it had burst.  Amazingly, God gave us so much peace and calmness from the very beginning.  In the car as we drove, we began a conversation of things we had to be thankful for- "It's a good thing that___" and we filled in the blank with tons of things.  It's a good thing it wasn't a fire.  It's a good thing we weren't in the 95-car pile-up on I-77 that had happened the day before on the road that David's dad drives every week.  It's a good thing we just rent.  It's a good thing that we had decided to leave late that morning so I had done our laundry before we left.  And on and on.

We arrived home around 7:30 to find our home already filled with workers moving things and setting out large dryer fans, others digging up our front yard to access the water line, etc.  We were told that it would take at least a month to renovate and we would have to find somewhere to stay in the meantime, but that first thing in the morning they would need to tear up our kitchen so that had to be packed up first.  We surveyed the damage, loaded up bags of wet clothes out of Mac's dresser, loaded coolers of food out of the freezer and some valuables, and headed to some friends' to stay the night.

1.  Friends who were available to take us in at a moment's notice the first night

I put out a flash on Facebook that we would need help moving most of our things out in the morning.  On Tuesday morning, I arrived at the house to start packing the kitchen, as friends and people we didn't even know from church showed up to help pack and load while workers continued to tear things up and keep the large fans going everywhere.

2.  Friends who were available to take Mac, feed him and care for him all day for us
3.  Church allowing us to move our belongings and food items there temporarily

About halfway through the morning, David stopped and talked to me and informed me that our landlord was going to sell the condo after it was renovated, and that we would need to move altogether.  We had a month-to-month lease and knew he was wanting to sell soon, but just didn't know it would be now, when we had just a day or two to get our things out of the damaged house.  Now, we love where we lived.  It was a nice neighborhood and a nice condo with a fireplace and plenty of space, and a pool in the community.  We have a great relationship with our landlord.  Suddenly we had to pack up EVERYTHING we owned.  It was so overwhelming to me to try to pack in so much chaos, I didn't know where to begin and all of our boxes were in the attic, where the flood started and the most damage was.

4.  Friends who jumped right in, packing dishes in towels and whatever they could find to do while I walked around like a zombie, drinking my coffee and playing Newsboys on the cd player
5.  Friends who brought lunch for all the packers and movers
6.  Free boxes and packing materials from church and friends
7.  Friend who washed ALL of Mac's clothes and folded them neatly in order.  Going through the bags later, I was blessed all over again by this labor of love.

That evening, David and I HAD to go to our birth center tour at the hospital because I had put it off for so long, so by about 5 we called it an evening and sent everyone home.

8.  Friends who brought David and me dinner
9.  Going to the birth center tour, which was more like a lecture so we got to sit for awhile after an exhausting day; during which I was reading messages from church friends on Facebook on the IPod which made me cry!  So much love and support!

Wednesday, David went to work and I spent the day packing the remainder of the house (with help from friends) so that it would be ready to be moved first thing on Thursday morning.

10.  More boxes, help packing, babysitting, and lunch from friends
11.  Friend from church picking up huge bags of bedding to take to the laundromat to wash and air out
12. Friends offering for us to stay in their spacious home through the weekend while their family went on a camping trip

That afternoon, I was sitting in the kitchen alone eating my lunch, when one of the workers stopped by.  "If you don't mind me asking," he said, "What church do you go to?"  He had noticed all of the love and help we had been receiving.  WOW!  What a testimony of the body of Christ!

13.  The presence of church family in my home as we packed, not just for the physical help, but how it helped me to not feel alone and desolate during an emotionally and physically draining time.

I was almost done for the day when the workers finally accessed our belongings in the attic and began moving them down for me.  Our Christmas trees and large light up nativity came down first, with water pouring out of the packages.  They left our large box of Christmas decorations in the attic until the next day, as it still was pouring water, but brought down all of our other things.  Other than Christmas decor, we had camping gear, baby gear (bassinet, stroller, playmat, swing, etc.), cardboard boxes of all my children's chapter books, all of our empty cardboard boxes, and some miscellaneous items in the attic.  Some of the boxes of children's books were wet, but the books themselves were dry inside.  All of the baby gear was completely dry, even the plastic we had over them.  The camping gear was damp but savable.   I moved the children's books to new boxes and called it a day.  By this point, I was starting to feel a little lost, because I no longer had a home.

14.  So little of our belongings being damaged
15.  Realizing how little we were actually attached to our things
16.  Throwing away items that we had gotten for free in the first place
17.  The church bringing delicious dinners to David and me for the rest of the week
18.  David's mom finding us a storage unit online so we could move the rest of our things there

The next day, David came to start moving everything I had packed up to storage, with the help of a pickup borrowed from church friends.  He got the other Christmas box from the attic and laid the items out to start drying and so I could go through them.  When I came later, I found myself pouring water out of glass Christmas tree bulbs and thinking of how laughable my first-world problems were.  We did throw out some decorations that just weren't worth trying to save, and our soaked Advent Book.

19.  All of my homemade decorations, like the Christmas tree skirt and chain I had knitted, being perfectly fine
20.  Friends taking Mac at a moment's notice when I realized that I was needed to help move and couldn't watch him.
21.  Buy one, get one for 99c Dairy Queen coupons

That night we went to a showing of a house for rent that I had found online.  It wasn't for us, but we got our feet wet house hunting and began to define what we were actually looking for.  By Friday, all of our things were in storage and we were free to relax at the home we were staying at, house hunt online, go to two apartment showings, and sort through the menagerie of things we had kept out of storage and brought with us to live on.

22.  Two house showings so close in time to each other

I found one condo that I really liked the looks of online, but when I called, it was already leased.  A new one in the same area was posted that day, so we drove by the neighborhood while we were out and were really impressed with the community and what I could see peeking in the windows.  We couldn't get ahold of that realtor though.  That brought us to Saturday, when most realties were closed.  I tried calling the realtor of the condo I wanted again (along with several other realties), but he didn't answer.  Later that day, he called me back and set up a showing for that afternoon!  The condo was JUST as good as I hoped it would be.  It would be in our price range if water and sewer were included in the rent, but most of the places we had looked at didn't have water included.  At the showing, that was one of my first questions.

23.  Getting a showing on a Saturday to the condo I really wanted
24.  Water and sewer being included in the monthly rent
25.  The condo not being leased yet

The condo was available for move in immediately, and the thought of being able to settle into that house by the next weekend was like a dream come true!  We spent Sunday afternoon getting our application ready to put in on Monday morning when the realty office opened.

26.  Friend letting us print needed documents for the application at their house

First thing Monday morning, I got the needed money orders at the bank and booked it to the realty office

27.  Peace from God whether we got the condo we wanted or not
28.  Mac sleeping well in multiple pack n' plays at multiple houses

We were the first people to put in an application for that condo that day, so our hopes were up.  We were hoping for an answer by the end of the day, but it wasn't actually finalized yet.  I was told that the application had been processed (and I assumed, approved) by the realtor and they were waiting for approval from the property owner.  Another night trying to get some sleep!  But the next morning, a week and a day after the flood, we got a call from the realtor that we had been approved and could take possession this Friday and move on Saturday!

WOW!  What a crazy, exhausting week full of blessings.  I can't help but think that there is some reason that God wanted us to live in this new place RIGHT NOW and that it probably has more to do than living closer to the beach or having more space before the baby comes (two pluses to the new condo).  I pray that David and I will continue to listen to Him and see what purpose he has for us in this new home.

I've been told, "I don't know how you did it."  Let me assure you of one thing, and that's that I DIDN'T!  If it were just me, I'd still be packing up my kitchen and probably crying!  God's strength and the love of friends are what got 'er done.

Our hearts are so full and we can't express how much love we have been shown from so many people this week.  Never did we need to despair or feel sorry for ourselves with so much support holding us up and peace from God keeping us together.  I feel like I have barely scratched the surface of all the little blessings and things that "worked out" this week, but I wanted to write this to at least start a list and remember all of the things we have seen God do this week.

Purex with Crystals Review

Posted by: WoodElves / Category:

Purex sent me a bottle of the new Purex with Crystals detergent to try and review.  This new product combines the fragrance and fabric softener of Crystals with the performance of Purex detergent, leaving your laundry smelling beautiful and clean - but you only need to use one product.  I'm happy with the performance and scents of my Purex products, and I did not notice that this product was any better than the Purex products that I already use.  If you're a Purex Crystals fan, though, you'll want to check it out!

Purex did not send me any coupons to give away this time - but check out my new reviews and giveaways for Purex Natural Elements Tropical Splash detergent and Soft Scrub Advanced Surface!

New Soft Scrub Advanced Surfaces Review & Giveaway

Posted by: WoodElves / Category:

Soft Scrub sent me a sample of their new Soft Scrub Advanced Surface cleaner to try and review.  Soft Scrub Advanced Surface is a rinse-free gel that cleans and polishes granite and marble countertops, glass cooktops, and stainless steel.  It claims to be tough on stains and gentle on even your most delicate surfaces. I was excited to try this on our glass cooktop because I'm a messy cook and need a tough cleaner to keep it looking good.  I think the stains we get on our cooktop were too tough for this cleaner, though.  It did a great job of polishing the glass, but was not completely effective in getting all of the stains out.  For something that does not need as much heavy duty cleaning as it needs polishing, I think this product would work great, and you can be sure that it will protect your surface.

I have three more coupons for any Soft Scrub product to give away, so you can try for yourself!

I'll contact the winners by email or Facebook (however I can reach you) after the giveaway is closed, and you'll have 48 hours to respond or I'll choose a new winner.

Felt activity bags

Posted by: WoodElves / Category:

I am working on making some busy bags for Mac for after the baby comes, to keep him occupied when I'm occupied.  I got the inspiration for these felt activities from this post here.  I made up some of my own that were more boy-themed, too.  I might make some more (I especially like the faces one), but maybe I'll wait to see how well he likes the ones I already made.

Bugs

 Autumn Tree

Plate of Food (may make more food)

Ocean Fishes

Cars (may develop this one more, add wheels, etc.)

Soft Scrub Giveaway!

Posted by: WoodElves / Category:

Soft Scrub sent me a bottle of their recently improved Total All Purpose Bath & Kitchen Cleanser to review, and THREE coupons for ANY free Soft Scrub product to give away!  Their popular lemon cleanser is tough on stains, yet gentle on surfaces, and the new formula has more whitening power and less residue, for better rinsing.  They also redesigned the bottle and added a new cap for improved dispensing.  Check out their website (www.softscrub.com) for more information!  Honestly, I did not notice any difference in how the product was dispensed, but it cleaned my bathroom well and left it smelling fresh and clean.  Also, I've always thought of Soft Scrub as being abrasive, so was happy to find that it is gentle on the surfaces in my home.

One of the entry options for this giveaway is to enter the Soft Scrub One Surface At A Time Sweepstakes.  The grand prize of this sweepstakes is $1000, and 250 second prize winners will get a coupon for a free Soft Scrub product.  You'll want to check it out.

I'll contact the winners by email or Facebook (however I can reach you) after the giveaway is closed, and you'll have 48 hours to respond or I'll choose a new winner.

Honey Bunches of Oats Giveaway!!

Posted by: WoodElves / Category:

Good news!  Post sent me a box of their new Honey Bunches of Oats Tropical Blends cereal to review, and TWO coupons for a FREE box of any Honey Bunches of Oats to give away!  This is in conjunction with their huge Tropical Trio Sweepstakes and the release of Purex Natural Elements Tropical Splash detergent.  The sweepstakes grand prize is a 4 night stay at Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach in Hawaii.  There are lots of other prizes to win, too, so check it out.

We love Honey Bunches of Oats and really enjoyed the new tropical flavor.  It has crispy mango flavored flakes combined with real coconut shavings and coconut flavored granola clusters.  I'm not a big coconut fan but it wasn't too much coconut for me.  It is a very flavorful cereal and blends in well with the Honey Bunches of Oats brand.

I'll contact the winners by email or Facebook (however I can reach you) after the giveaway is closed, and you'll have 48 hours to respond or I'll choose a new winner.
